Give me a moment…I’m trying to think of the things that this Post IS NOT.
It’s not meant to be about politics although no doubt there will be some who see it as such and me as a raving Lefty, but I can handle that in fact I understand. Everything concerns Politics. Everything is Political (and I am a lefty, although not ‘raving’).
The very word (Politics) is itself derived from Greek/Latin.
It’s first attested in Late Middle English, from Middle French politique, in turn from Latin politicus, which is the Latinisation of the Greek politikos, meaning “of, for, or relating to citizens”; this in turn derives from Greek polites, “citizen”, which derives from Greek polis, “city”.
So actually, we are all in this together.
Anyway, continuing….what this post is, is a Plea.
A plea to er…everyone (actually the mighty few who read my stuff). A Plea from me to suggest that now might be the time to attempt to recover our senses and return to the old ways. You know what I mean? The return to ‘disagree to agree’.
Enough of that and back to my plea which to put it in a nutshell is ‘be nicer to each other’.
Of course, Trump had help with the horrible attitudes that he promoted. It wasn’t all down to him. We have seen the rise of Social Media which gives, rightly or wrongly a voice to everyone and proves The Pen, is indeed mightier than the sword.
Can we stop and think about what we are saying or planning to say?
Is it possible that we can become aware of the terrible consequences that our words can have?
And yes, I admit I’m as guilty as anyone else, but I promise I will try.
However, do not get me wrong. There is nothing wrong with disagreement.
The art of argument is a skill to be proud of. It is healthy and it brings (sometimes) much needed change. What we appear to have forgotten over the past few years is that argument, any argument, requires evidence. Proof. Without those things we are into nonsense.
Unfortunately, with Trump et al came an example of what can happen without basic (very basic) facts.
Accusation after accusation.
He did this,
She, did that.
They plan to do this etc, etc
…and the end (desired) result? Confusion. Even a plea to recognise, ‘alternative, facts’. Unbelievable.
This has to stop.
I have to be honest here and say that I wonder if my plea for a rise in Common Sense Values amongst the population, is possible?
I worry that we have come too far to ever look back.
Unfortunately, there are some amongst us who revel in their new-found power. Once powerless fools, who have suddenly discovered that to sow a little confusion here and a little nonsense there, has allowed them an influence that they had never savoured before. An influence that has enabled them to crawl from their basements and from under their stones, into the light.
