THE VINTER

Personal View.

Although these pubs are supposed to be in no particular order, I’m going to go first with my favourite. My own local watering hole that I have been going to for years. Although I’ve tried all the other ones that I mention, and I like them. The Vintner is the one I like best for a number of reasons.

My main reason is because you can talk at the Vintner. It’s a comfortable wine bar. It looks good and although a little pricey compared to the more traditional pubs, it’s a good place to do business and take the kids. The ambiance is such that you can have a conversation without being disturbed. It’s comfortable and if you do want to use the restaurant, the food is good.

THE DIRTY DUCK

Personal View.

The pub with two names and one sign. On one side its ‘proper‘ name ‘The Black Swan’ on the other its nickname, ‘The Dirty Duck’. This is the theatre pub. Tales abound of the days of Richard Burton, Peter O’Toole and other ner-do-wells and their drunken exploits. Sadly all that’s left of those debauched times are some amazing photographs. The days of Pam the legendary landlady and all-night lock -ins are long gone and the Dirty Duck is now a tourist attraction but that’s OK.

Although now a managed house, the Duck is well served by Sam and his gang. Well worth a visit with good beer and fine food.

THE OLD THATCH TAVERN

Not many of them left now but the Old Thatch is a real and genuine blast from the past. With beams that probably served time as part of the Armada and a thatched roof that must have cost a fortune when it was refurbished not long ago, it’s a great pub. If you can get a seat near the fire) it’s probably the best pub I know to relax in. There’s also tiny garden out back complete with serving hatch where you can go if you need nicotine and the small eating area serves really excellent food. If you want to try this great place out, you need to get in early as there’s not much room.
